So it finally happened, April 2024 marked the actual death of the 3DS and Wii U. Although we saw this coming, with the closure of the online store back in 2023, it still felt so painful when all servers were closed to our beloved games.
I still remember the excitement on Christmas Day in 2012 when I unwrapped the original 3DS. It was metallic red with the smallest screen, and although the 3D feature made me go cross eyed, I couldn’t put it down. I spent hours amazed by the 3D remaster of the Ocarina of Time and when ACNL was released a whole year later, oh boy, you never saw me!
So many memories. It’s just a shame that Nintendo felt the need to turn off all online support, considering there is still a huge 3DS fanbase out there, especially amongst cozy gamers, who still enjoy plenty of cozy 3DS games.
Although you can no longer enjoy them online with your friends anymore, I’ve put together a list of the best cozy 3DS games to play if you want to relive some classics from the more recent past!
Best Cozy 3DS Games For Cozy Gamers
Animal Crossing: New Leaf
Of courseI had to include Animal Crossing: New Leaf on a list of the best cozy 3DS games! Released in June 2013, this game reinvigorated my love for my 3DS as it took an already safe formula we came to expect from such a beloved franchise and improved on it- which I didn’t think was possible.
It offers players a highly immersive and charming experience that’s not only relaxing, but highly engaging too! As you’re the newly appointed mayor of this town, that’s filled with adorable animal villagers, it’s your task to embark on a journey to creatively shift the town to your wants and desires. Obviously it’s not the same level of customisation of New Horizons, but at the time, it certainly broke away from the generic formula of only being able to plant trees and flowers.
Moreover, New Leaf fosters a sense of camaraderie and connection, as players interact with quirky villagers, participate in seasonal events, and visit Tortimer island- which I highly recommend for the fun mini games! All in all New Leaf offers a vibrant and dynamic social experience that's sure to keep you coming back for more. That I can attest to, I didn’t put this game down for a good few years!
Tomodachi Life
If you want to revel in the wackiness of daily life, then I highly recommend playing this cozy 3DS fame! Offering one-of-a-kind experience that combines simulation, humour and plenty of randomness, you act as ‘Big Brother’ on this island that’s inhabited by Mii characters, based on friends, family or even celebrities, and you’re tasked with almost nurturing relationships, solving problems, and even creating unforgettable memories.
What makes Tomodachi Life the perfect cozy 3DS game is its sheer variety and unpredictability. From quirky interactions between Mii characters to unexpected events and surprises, every moment in Tomodachi Life is filled with laughter, joy, and surprises.
With its charming visuals, hilarious scenarios, and addictive gameplay, Tomodachi Life is a must-have for any 3DS owner. Whether you're looking for a lighthearted simulation game or simply want to escape into a world of crazy fun, Tomodachi Life delivers an unforgettable experience that's sure to put a smile on your face. I got it three years ago for my birthday and I’ve not stopped playing it. We just desperately need a sequel on the Nintendo Switch now.
Pokemon Sun/Moon
There’s nothing more cozy than snuggling up on a sun lounger on a summer’s day, and playing Pokemon Sun/Moon on the 3DS! With an immersive journey that takes you through the Hawaiian inspired region of Alola,it offers a rich blend of exploration and adventure, making every single moment feel fresh and exciting. This cozy 3DS game boasts vibrant visuals, a captivating storyline and takes full advantage of the console’s full capabilities, providing a highly immersive experience.
Additionally, Pokemon Sun/Moon introduced fresh and innovative features, such as Alolan forms, which breathes new life into classic Pokemon, and even has dynamic battles that keep players heavily invested. Whether you’re a veteran to the franchise, or new to the series, Pokemon Sun/Moon offers something for everyone, with its easy and accessible gameplay blended with strategic elements.
Before Nintendo ruthlessly cut it off, the game had extensive multiplayer options too, including trading and battling with friends, making the gameplay more personable. However despite online no longer being a thing on the 3DS anymore, I still recommend adding this to your 3DS library as it offers plenty of adventure and excitement. What version would you pick up? I have Pokemon Moon!
Detective Pikachu
Detective Pikachu offers a unique blend of mystery, humour and charm, where players step into the shoes of Tim Goodman as he teams up with a coffee loving Pikachu and together, they’re immersed in a captivating narrative game with intriguing cases to solve.
Not only is it a unique cozy 3DS game, but it also has an engaging storyline and lovable characters, brought to life through the game's impressive graphics and voice acting. The partnership between Tim and Pikachu really forms the heart of the game, as they work together to unravel the mysteries and uncover the truth behind the enigmatic Ryme City. \
Moreover, Detective Pikachu offers a refreshing departure from traditional Pokémon gameplay, focusing instead on detective work and puzzle-solving. From interviewing witnesses to gathering clues, every aspect of the game is designed to keep players entertained and engaged. I am so happy that a sequel got released for the Nintendo Switch!
Animal Crossing: Happy Home Paradise
I must admit at the time I didn’t give this game enough credit when it was initially released for the 3DS, however after playing Happy Home Paradise, I now have a new level of respect and admiration for this cost 3DS game!
It offers players a delightful escape into a world of creativity, relaxation, and community where you play as a vacation home designer who needs to fulfil the wants and dreams of adorable animal villagers by creating personalised spaces that reflect their unique personalities and preferences.
I also personally feel like it fosters a sense of community and connection, as players interact with these villagers and collaborate with them. Whether you’re exchanging ideas, participating in fun activities or simply enjoying the relaxed atmosphere and pace of the island, every moment in Happy Home Paradise is full of endless opportunities and immersion.

Even if you have never picked up a Professor Layton game in your life, I would still highly recommend it to cozy gamers who love puzzle games or simply enjoy a good mystery.

Offering cozy gamers a delightful blend of classic platforming and innovative gameplay, this game sees Mario embark on a quest to rescue Princess Peach from the clutches of Bowser (once again), as he must navigate through a series of imaginative and challenging levels filled with plenty of obstacles, enemies and secrets!
What sets Super Mario 3D Land apart from the other games in the franchise, is its masterful combination of traditional 3D platforming mechanics and immersive 3D capabilities. The game’s clever level design and inventive use of stereoscopic 3D effects create a sense of depth and immersion, making every jump, stomp, and power-up feel more exhilarating than ever before.
With a perfect balance of accessibility and challenge, this game features levels that are designed to be enjoyed by players of all skill levels. Whether you’re a seasoned Mario veteran from the NES days, or even new to the series, Super Mario 3D Land offers a rewarding and satisfying gameplay experience that’s sure to keep you coming back for more.

It offers players an exhilarating mix of high speed action, colourful tracks, and iconic characters from the Mario universe. As players hop behind the wheel of their favourite kart, as they power through a variety of different courses filled with twists, turns and obstacles.
